Crocodiles Rock (I won’t stop with the puns.)

Recently, over at THE EMPTY BOTTLE on a sweet “Free Music Monday,” I had the opportunity to catch the band, “Crocodiles.” Their sound was completely infectious as was their onstage presence. For about 45 minutes, it was 1983 and I was watching the same band that Jim and William Reid were watching, and at one point, I swear, they turned to each other in amazement and said, “We should really start a band like this and call it The Jesus and Mary Chain…”

As the show came to a close, 2010 returned, and Jim and William slowly morphed into a couple of coked up hipsters, I was left with the notion that I had just seen a really good performance from a really good band. Their records dance dreamily around “lo fi/shoe gaze” but never tumble headfirst into either genre. (Which, as it turns out, is a good thing, because this band is really good at playing their instruments. It’s nice to hear this kind of production really compliment a musician’s performance rather than sounding like a chorus of crowbars in an echo chamber.)

Check out their 2009 release “Summer of Hate” (the track below called “I Wanna Kill” is a great entry point for this band) and their 2010 release “Sleep Forever.”
